Domestic Metered Mail

First Class Mail is used to send letters, post cards, greeting cards, personal notes, checks and money orders. Postage can be sold in the form of stamps or metering. First-Class Mail and parcels leave the College once a day at 2:00 p.m. each day when the USPS picks up at the College.
  • Priority Mail
Priority Mail is anything sent first-class that weighs over 13 ounces. Priority Mail advertises delivery in two to three days. Anything under 13 ounces can be upgraded to Priority Mail status by placing $3.85 postage on a Priority Mail flat-rate envelope, or by adding Priority Mail stickers to any other packaging. Flat-rate envelopes and tyvek packs are available at the service window free of charge. It is important to remember that Priority Mail is not insured, traceable, or guaranteed to arrive in two to three days. Therefore, it is not the best way to send anything of value

    Methods for sending Priority Mail

    • Domestic and International flat rate box

Priority Express is the overnight delivery service offered by USPS. Priority Express delivers to any address in the U.S., 365 days a year. There is no additional charge for weekend or holiday delivery. All Priority Express shipments are automatically insured up to $100. Priority Express is the only expedited service that can deliver to a post office box. Priority Express is the College’s preferred express delivery service when Saturday delivery is required.

    Methods for Sending Priority Express

    • Domestic and International flat rate envelope
    • Domestic and International flat rate box
  • Standard Mail (B)/Parcel Post (BULK MAIL)
If speed is not important, but price is, Parcel Post/Standard Mail (B) might be an option. There is a slight price difference between first-class and standard (B) that becomes more pronounced as the weight of parcels or letters increase. The USPS will accept parcels mailed within the continental U.S. weighing up to 70 pounds and measuring up to 108 inches in length and girth combined. The USPS delivery goal for parcel delivery is two to nine days, depending on distance, however, some items can take two or more weeks to arrive.
  • Standard Mail (A) Nonprofit
The College of Charleston holds nonprofit permits at the USPS. The Office of Mail Services offers instruction sheets and stickers for preparation of nonprofit mail. Because of the significant restrictions with any standard mailing, only supervisors are authorized to handle nonprofit mailings.

International Metered Mail

Shipping and mailing internationally through the USPS is subject to a variety of rules and regulations. Every country has restrictions on different materials. For details, visit the USPS International Mail and Packages web page. Please bring your printed customs form to Mail Services.
